How to Fix Music & Video Files that Don’t Play on Linux

arch linux codec decoder fedora how to linux music opensuse plugin ubuntu video videos requires to install plugins to play media files

Having troubles with listening to music or watching videos on Linux??

It’s not a big problem it’s just that the distribution of your Linux doesn’t have the necessary codecs.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu doesn’t provide codecs, but it allows you to download the MP3 codec from Fluendo during installation. This is a codec that Fluendo has made available for anyone to install for free legally.

Or there are others available through the Ubuntu Software Center as restricted extras.

Arch Linux

Arch Linux doesn’t come with codecs. But the project includes restricted formats in its repositories.

You can get the codecs when you install the libraries needed to play them.

OpenSUSE

OpenSUSE installs only free codecs only. The project made an list of formats.

You can also buy codecs, but the community suggests an alternative free solution.

Fedora

Fedora doesn’t provide any proprietary codecs, not pre-installed or in repositories.
You can add non-free codecs from the unofficial RPM Fusion repository.
